Book Review: Weather Girl

WEATHER GIRL by Rachel Lynn Solomon was one of my most anticipated reads for 2022. Why? Well for one thing, people who read early copies of it RAVED about it. Another reason? The Ex-Talk was one of my favorite books of 2021 (and one of my top rom coms period. Also, an arc went for over $2000 during an auction and that naturally really got my attention.

So was it worth all the hype?

Absolutely.

It was fun, it was funny, it was adorable. I loved the newsroom setting and all the weather talk. And the whole Parent Trap aspect was absolutely fantastic.

Ari Abrams is a tv meteorologist working what she had hoped to be her dream job working under legendary Seattle meteorologist and her personal idol Torrence Hale. But Torrence isn’t the boss Ari had hoped for, and the environment in the newsroom is downright toxic due to the bad blood between Torrence and her ex-husband (and station news director) Seth.

After an ugly incident at the company Christmas party (honestly it was epic and I hope to some day write a scene as amazingly bonkers), Ari teams up with sports reporter Russell to help them get back together. They were once a power couple, so maybe they can get that old spark back.

Sparks don’t just fly between Torrence and Seth, but also Ari and Russell. Ari and Russell open up to each other in ways they wouldn’t normally let other people in. While Ari is always sunshine and happiness to the world, she fears Russell won’t be able to handle her stormy side as well.

One thing that I absolutely LOVED about WEATHER GIRL was that Ari struggles with depression, which is something I’ve dealt with for almost half my life. It was nice seeing that struggle being shown in a rom com (not some sort of dark thriller or depressing lit fic). She’s a rom com heroine but she also has depression! The representation was so nice.

And I loved Russell! He’s not your average rom com hero. He’s not the gym rat hunk. And he’s got a daughter!

The banter is excellent, the chemistry is fantastic. I love workplace romances, and while I know sometimes they can be tricky with power dynamics and things, this worked so so well.

Highly recommend this one!
