Author Love: Kerry Winfrey

There are SO many books I want to talk about, and since I am only posting one to two times a week and am constantly reading more, I’ve decided to highlight some favorite authors and tackle all of their books (so far) at once. This way I can squeeze in as many books as possible!

First up is Kerry Winfrey. I am a huge fan. If you haven’t read her books, she writes hilarious rom coms (for those of you who want to know, they are closed door). Excellent banter, really funny characters, but also a lot of heart. She started out with YA books but then switched over to adult.

Waiting for Tom Hanks was her adult debut in 2019. I actually rushed to our local bookstore to get it as soon as I could because I couldn’t wait another second for it. Annie Cassidy wants to become a rom com screen writer and dreams of finding her own Tom Hanks, you know the perfect leading man. When a movie starts filming in her hometown, Annie is able to get a job on set. That’s where she meets the star of the movie, Drew Danforth, and the exact opposite of Tom Hanks. This would definitely be a celebrity / normal person trope (is this a trope? I think it is. It is now).

Not Like The Movies is her second book and centers around Annie’s best friend Chloe. Chloe doesn’t dream of being in a rom com like Annie, but she did inspire Annie’s movie along with her boss Nick Velez. As the buzz about the movie grows, Chloe can’t help but look at Nick in a new light even though she doesn’t think she’s meant for a happily ever after. (Obviously read WFTH before NLTM). Grumpy / sunshine is a new favorite trope for me, and this is one! You might also say friends to lovers and work place romance.

Her third book is Very Sincerely Yours, and if you twisted my arm I’d have to tell you it’s my favorite. It’s got a You’ve Got Mail feel with emailing. When Teddy Phillips is dumped, she finds herself very lost – working a job she has no passion for at a toy shop and moving in with her two best friends. So she emails the local children’s puppet show host Everett St. James (think hot Mr. Rogers), asking for advice. And the two begin emailing back and forth. (This is stand alone, but there are a few special appearances from some previous characters, which is one of my favorite things in books). As for tropes? I’m calling this the You’ve Got Mail trope. They are writing emails to each other and only Teddy knows who Everett is.

Her next book Just Another Love Song will be published in August, and I can’t wait!

Also, you really should subscribe to her newsletter No One Asked. It is absolutely hilarious. I look forward to them every week. She talks a lot about movies, specifically rom coms and things that aren’t rom coms that she tries to make a case that they are. (Like Witness and Sleeping with the Enemy). She also made me sort of want to watch the Fifty Shades of Gray movies? I never thought that would happen.
