Book Review: The Dead Romantics

From the moment I read about THE DEAD ROMANTICS many months ago, I have been dying (no pun intended) to read it. THE LOVE INTEREST IS A GHOST! HOW WILL THAT WORK?? It’s a romance, so it has to have a HEA (or it is being categorized wrong but now isn’t the time for that conversation). So I’ve been anxiously awaiting it to be published.

No spoilers but in case you were concerned – there is a happily ever after.

And honestly, isn’t the point of romance not how it ends, but how they get there? It is for me anyway. The whole it’s the journey, not the destination. Anyway… ease your minds, there is a HEA.

Florence Day is a ghostwriter for a popular romance author who is having problems finishing her book because, after a terrible breakup, she believes romance is dead. So how do you write a romance if you don’t believe in it?

Unfortunately her new editor Benji Andor isn’t willing to extend her deadline. Convinced her career is over, Florence must return home for the first time since high school after the unexpected death of her father. Her family owns the funeral parlor in town and is a quirky bunch. After she arrives, Ben also shows up unexpected. Only he’s a ghost. Florence, like her father, can see ghosts and helps them move on, something she tries to ignore and doesn’t tell other people about anymore.

While trying to figure out how to help Ben, Florence finds herself realizing she wishes he weren’t a ghost and that maybe love isn’t dead after all.

I LOVED THIS BOOK. It was so different and quirky. It is dark and heavier (her father is dead, the family owns a funeral parlor, the love interest is a ghost – there is a LOT OF DEATH). But I think the quirkiness and the humor and also the tenderness really balance it out. I loved Florence and Ben. I loved Florence’s super odd family. I laughed, I sobbed (sorry, it’s true) and I didn’t want to leave the Days behind. You know it’s a good romance when you are messaging your friend who is also reading it to say “BUT HOW ARE THEY GOING TO GET TOGETHER??” And then immediately convincing your writing slack that everyone should read it IMMEDIATELY.

So, now, I’m telling you – GO READ IT! It was also chosen as the GMA book for July. So if you don’t listen to me, listen to them. You don’t want to miss this one!
