On Screen: Action Rom Coms

My husband likes action movies. I like rom coms.

I am very luck that my husband will watch just about anything with me (although he has drawn the line at watching Bridgerton … so far). He’s seen You’ve Got Mail and Notting Hill about a million times, happily watches whatever new rom com has come out (most recently Anyone but You but that’s a post for another day).

While he’s happy to watch just about anything, he’s happiest watching action movies.

And that’s why the action rom coms are some of the best genre blends out there. There’s something for the guys and the ladies! (Yes I know not all guys care about action movies and not all ladies care about romance but just go with me here). There’s excitement! And romance! And comedy! What more can you ask for?

An important thing to note is that for this to be a true blend, there needs to be a pretty even split. So something like Indiana Jones (it’s been a very long time since I saw one of those) doesn’t work. Plenty of action, not nearly enough romance.

The best example of a classic is of course Romancing the Stone. It’s got it all. And there have been a few more recently like The Lost City and of my personal favorites Mr. Right.

The two most recent ones, which both came out this year, are in my opinion both excellent and fun and star two of the best leading men. Ryan Gosling and Glenn Powell. It’s hard to beat.

The Fall Guy and Hit Man both have that fantastic balance of action, romance, and comedy. It’s got something for (most) everyone, I think. I thought they were both clever and fun! Nothing super serious or even necessarily makes the absolute most sense. Truthfully, I’m usually just along for the ride and don’t spend too much time worrying about if it makes sense (again, see Mr. Right lol).

And while we’re here, I need to take a moment to discuss my undying love for Glenn Powell, and I would like him in about 15 more rom coms (still waiting for him to be paired up with Zooey Deutch again so they can be the new McConaughey/Hudson) . He plays a fake hit man (well he wasn’t one, but then he becomes a fake one for the police to set people up), but his disguises are hilarious.

I’ve become a big fan of genre mashups anyway (I wrote a mystery rom com & have plans for another), so I’m really excited to see these movies coming out. We don’t get enough rom coms as it is! I am a big fan of any and all of them (well, most. I don’t love EVERYTHING).

So my point is – watch these! And also, movie people, please make more like this. Thank you!
